Sony Vaio Z Laptop Computer Hands On Review
Rarely – very rarely – does an amazing laptop reach the market. Even more occasionally, it’s not made by Apple. Is this uncommonness what makes the Sony Vaio Z so special? No – it’s special because it’s awesome.
Before we go on, remember that the Vaio Z retails for £2,039 (mid-range), so only the brave of heart should consider the purchase. Now that hurdle is out the way, prepare to be excited.
Small, Powerful, Cool
The Sony Vaio Z is feather-light and beautifully sculpted. We actually managed to balance the 1.2kg system on our little finger, until some worried looks from the Sony team made us put it down. It’s also exceptionally thin at just 16.65mm, making Apple’s Macbook Air look fat and heavy in comparison.

Despite the diminutive form, there’s been no scrimping on power. The Sandy Bridge Intel Core i7 chip is 3.4GHz – faster than the Air’s 2.13GHz Core 2 Duo processor. The RAM is also a huge 8GB – four times that of the Air. Oh, and the screen resolution is 1600 x 900 on the 13.1″ screen (better than the slightly-larger 13.3″ Macbook Pro).
The sleek black form is our favourite Sony to date – and while decidedly more business than an Apple product – it’s just as attractive in a different way. There’s something about the matt black finish that exudes quality, professionalism and “wow, awesome” all at once. Oh, hell – we like it more than the Apple product. There, we said it.

It’s Like Lego!
While the aforementioned features make this laptop great, the modularity of the device puts it into a world of its own. You’ll get seven hours of battery from the built-in battery pack, but attach the sheet battery underneath (it’s the same footprint as the laptop, making the base a little thicker) and you’ll add on a further seven hours. 680g for seven more hours? Brilliant.
Whether or not you’ve added on the battery, the Power Media Dock is a must-use for home computing. With a built-in AMD Radeon HD6650M graphics card, an optical drive and three video-out ports (D-sub and HDMI), you’ll be able to plug-in and power up-to four displays from your system. You’ll also find two USB 2 and a USB 3 port, as well as Gigabit Ethernet
Conclusion
It’s not cheap, but damn-it: it’s cool. And while the Vaio Z is smaller and more powerful than an Apple system, it’s the accolade of awesomeness that really stands out – Sony has taken back part of a commodity that Apple has monopolised for years.
